There I was, alone heading for divorce, broke, not sure if my kids still loved me and someone telling me I had an attitude problem. How much worse could things get?
‘Mate you need to come along this weekend to the Born Rich seminar and get you life in order”. “Yeh with what… Monopoly money!” “I’ll help you just come along”.
And here we are. But to tell this story I need to go back a bit.
Talk to anyone who’s known me a while and they’ll contest, I’ve always been a bit entrepreneurial… I’ll have a go at most things and for the majority of my working life I’ve been self-employed and lived a reasonably comfortable life.
Yes, I’ve had some good businesses, a few not so good and a couple of really great ones. I’ve worked for a few people too. Some really good and some not so good and actually a couple of really terrible ones, (in my opinion).
At 64, you could say I’ve been around a bit, a Mechanic by trade, An automatic transmission mechanic, a handy man, a tiler, carpenter, worked in data and electrical, automotive spare parts, sales person, IT, education, mailroom management, (don’t ask). Web hosting provider, Importer and wholesaler, gee the list goes on and on.
But things began to go haywire when 911 happened. I was working in corporate IT education and watched my whole company and it’s management structure go down in the second tower. Bloody devastating and I still get emotional thinking about that day now.
It wasn’t long before I was out of a job with a modest payout and thinking I could take on the world. It also wasn’t long before the money began to run out as well. I was in debt and some might say I had an attitudinal issue although I couldn’t see it at the time.
Websites were just getting going and I had a family member, (ex-family member) that suggested I should go sell his web hosting and websites which seemed very entrepreneurial at the time so off I went banging on doors.
I walked the streets and sure enough businesses wanted websites and trusted web hosting but I worked out really quickly that these things were time consuming to pull together and didn’t really pay the bills.
Two kids, a nice new home and a trusting wife and I was going down hill fast. Very fast.
Long story short, we sold the house moved into a renter and I still could seem to find a job. I’m sure it wasn’t my attitude problem, after all the world owed me for all my hard work. Funny how things go though, I eventually got a sales position with a fellow that gave me my first website to fix. I’ll tell you that story another time because it’s really relevant to where we are today.
Soon enough my marriage was on the rocks and I was moving out and still apparently had that attitude problem or at least that’s what a few people told me because gee, I couldn’t seem to get a job for love nor money until I was on the bones of my bum. Funny that. There’s another story in this, but another day.
Around that time, I was introduced through network marketing, (another failure for me) to a little book call The Science of Getting Rich by a guy called Wallace D Wattles which brings me back to that Born Rich seminar. The book is well over 100 years old and less that 100 pages but it totally blew me away. It was really stripped back but made really good sense. I couldn’t put it down. How could there be an exact science to getting what you want? I just needed a few bucks is all, this little book said I could have that… Goodo.
You Were Born Rich presented by Bob Proctor really brought things home for me and things began to change and quickly, including my attitude I’m told…
Next blog I’m going to let you in on those changes and the profound impact they had on my life and what they could do for yours if you’re up for it.
Until next time, hope you’re living the life you really love.
Pete
